Tourism, worldwide, has been recognized as a major vehicle to produce, create and distribute wealth, generate employment and earn foreign exchange. However, tourism industry in India is still at a nascent stage, accounting for only around 6% of the country's GDP. While India has vast opportunities in the tourism sector, given the budgetary constraints the government expenditure on tourism in India is only 0.9% as compared to around 4% in China, Sri Lanka and US and over 9% in Singapore. Having witnessed the economic impact tourism across the world, there is a renewed focus on comprehensive and planned development of the sector, both at the Central and State level. Most State governments have substantial holdings in areas of tourist interest. The key challenge currently is to unlock the potential of these areas so as to enable governments to mobilize resources that could be ploughed back into improvement of the sector as whole (involving brand building, infrastructure improvements, etc).
iDeCK has been advising various State Governments in conceptualization, structuring and bid process management for development of tourism facilities through private sector participation. This includes:
- Area development projects
- Hotels
- Eco-tourism projects
- Convention centres
- Premium showcase projects like the tourist train etc.
For the Government of Karnataka, iDeCK has successfully completed the structuring and bid process for development of around 30 properties through private participation with an estimated total benefit to the Government of over Rs. 500 Crores.
