Sectors - Urban Infrastructure
The urban infrastructure sector in India is arguably the most complex of the infrastructure sectors. On the one hand are the “potential” investments running into tens of thousands of crores, required to meet the basic infrastructure requirements of our cities, and on the other hand are serious issues that preclude even a fraction of the investments actually materializing. A drastic re-think is required on how the infrastructure needs, present and future, of India’s cities, have to be met.

The country has been witnessing rapid urbanization, and the concept that ‘India lives in its villages’ is fast changing. Urban centres are increasingly acting as growth-engines and GDP-drivers for the country in the future. This is resulting in increased budgetary allocations and various schemes promulgated by both Central and State Governments. The Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission is an instance of one such clear effort.
